Best photoshoots in Malta

A Swedish portrait photographer in Malta

A few months into my stay in Malta, and I can truly say I have enjoyed my time here. When we first arrived here in January we had all sorts of crazy weather hail, rain, storm and I admit I might have thought silently to myself "we left Singapore for THIS"?
But I think just because we had lived 10 years in Singapore and was kind of tired of the constant humidity and hot hot hot temperatures, we quickly got to enjoy the change in weather (I know, it's a bit strange but our family loves when it rains....) and for a couple of weeks now we've had summer bliss kinda weather:).

I was thinking of doing a best of my shoots in Malta so far, I hope you enjoy the photos and the stories behind them.

Family photoshoot at Riviera Bay

The first time I visited Golden Bay/Riviera Bay was in December on a rainy, stormy day. Even thought the weather wasn't showing up from a good side, I already then knew that this will be a favourite location. And I wasn't wrong at all. There is nothing I don't like with this location, the sunsets are amazing and the backlight is gorgeous and every creative photographers dream.

Mimmi and Rikard and the cutest kids I know, Clara and Calle were the first family I photographed at Riviera Bay on a sunny afternoon just before sunset. The best time to photograph is about 30 minutes before the sun dips into the horizon, and as with any photoshoot I let the kids run the show. Clara was more interested in collecting sea shells (so cute!) but when we called for her she came and played with her parents. I'm so lucky to have gotten to photograph this gorgeous family in such a amazing location.

A Mdina photoshoot

For those that has been following me for a while now you guys now I'm a searcher for great light. Moving to Malta gave me a blank canvas to explore and with all the beautiful locations Malta has to offer I just had to try and have a photoshoot in Mdina.

So this is my first photoshoot in Mdina, I met up with Catherina and Richard. And their cute little baby girl Ella on a Sunday morning (If you are interested in why I was late and kept my dear clients waiting click HERE

I know that it may not be everyones favourite thing to get up early on a sleep in kind of day, dress nicely and meet a stranger with a camera....I get it. But you guys, rocked it! I had so much fun photographing you and I love the photographs we captured together!

Funfilled Mdina familyshoot

Tomek and Mimmi, such cool parents you are! I love the way you interact with your baby girl, so much pure love. And I can't believe how fast your baby girl RUNS!
This morning was unusually busy in the alleys of Mdina, lots of people getting to and from their homes and also a bunch of tourists (and who can blame them really, such a gorgeous location) at one point there were some tourist even stopping beside us gushing over how cute Oliwia was:). Me loves me some audience, no problemo....

Thank you for meeting up with me so early on a Sunday morning, so happy you love the photos and I know you will treasure these memories forever.

A sunset maternity photoshoot

Karolina and Dawid are expecting their firs child. To actually be a tiny part of their family story blows my mind....
For this maternity photoshoot I wanted to photograph in a way that was creative and free. No pressure of any sort, just photographing in a way that makes my heart happy. Shooting for backlight photographs (even when the camera thinks you are crazy and refuses to focus), making Karolina trust me in a way to show her true self. That was my goal. And if I may say so, I think we did it.

I love when the people I photograph trusts my vision and just goes with the flow.
Best of luck on your new adventure as parents, i know you both will be awesome!

A Valletta family photo shoot

What is a round tour of testing different locations in Malta without photographing in Valletta? I agree, not much.

I admit to being an emotional person and all my sessions are very dear to me.

But when you photograph a family that the day after the shoot leaves Malta and moves back to Sweden, that is something special, for sure.
I felt I wanted to create meaningful memories from their stay in Malta and Valletta was a fun option to photograph in. A Saturday morning (oh so early for a non morning person like my but so worth it) only a few people on their way to work but almost empty unlike the buzzy Valletta during daytime.
I love these photos so much, the light this morning was AMAZING (I know I say that a lot) I love their outfits, Ingrid your little cheeky monkey, it was so much fun hanging out with you!

I'm still in the process of editing these photos but it looks very promising, don't it?

planning a successful newborn portrait session-malta newborn photographer

By the time the parents of newborn clients see their portraits two short weeks after their session, their little one will ,already, have grown and changed, so much.  He won’t fit exactly the same way in their arms; he won’t stay quite as curled up in that adorable newborn position.  And it won’t be long before he’s lifting his head, and rolling over on his own.

This is the reason newborn portraits are such a wonderful gift.  This magical stage is fleeting, and I love presenting families with portraits that they will never be able to get again.  They look at me and say, “Wow, I cannot believe how much my baby has changed!”  And as they do, their newborn portraits will become an ever more valuable gift.

lifestyle newborn session, newborn session malta, father and son, baby boy

let’s talk about what you need to know in order to plan a successful newborn portrait session.

book early

Be sure to contact me during your pregnancy.   The best time to reserve your Newborn photography session is during your pregnancy before you reach 30 weeks to ensure availability. Although I will try to accommodate you at any stage, please don’t wait until your baby is here to schedule your session!. During your pregnancy, I will reserve a tentative session date based on your due date. After you deliver, reach out to me as soon as possible to let me know that your little one has arrived, and we will finalize your session date for the soonest possible opening within the first 14 days.

schedule your session within the first 30 days

Since I offer lifestyle newborn session there is no need to schedule your session within the first 2 weeks. My goal is to focus on you as a family and your connection with your precious baby, I will not pose your baby or you, I will however be there to guide you before your session and during it to help create stunning photographs of your family.

don’t forget maternity portraits

Of course, it’s all about the baby. But, documenting your own journey into motherhood is equally important in your life story as the arrival of the baby.  Maternity portraits are usually scheduled between 28-34 weeks, and sometimes much later (37-38 weeks) to ensure the belly is nice and round.  With a twin pregnancy, there are additional considerations. Twin maternity sessions are recommended at 28-30 weeks (no later than 30). Carrying a child is one of life’s greatest gifts. Take a portrait that you can pass along to that child, which brings me to my next and most important point…

be patient

Newborn sessions require between 2-4 hours. You may want to bring a book or your laptop, and be prepared to hang out with me for a while. There will likely be several breaks in order to feed, change or calm the baby during the session; the baby will dictate.  Often there will be accidents to clean up. This happens all the time and is fully expected.

 consider the future value

Newborn portraits are invaluable because you can never get them again, and they become more valuable as time passes. Today they’re important to you, in 18 years when that child leaves home, they will likely be even more important, and in 40 or 50 or 60 years, those portraits will be one of the most valued images that child has as they look back over their life remembering you.

discuss prints and products during the initial consultation

A custom Newborn portrait session is a luxury investment. The session fee includes the initial consultation, your 2-4 hour session, the photographer’s time and talent, and the presentation of your portrait proofs during an in-person Ordering Session.

Be mindful that prints, products, and digital files are not included in the session fee. These can be purchased separately after viewing your proofs. All photographers structure pricing differently and offer a wide array of products to purchase. Similarly, each photographer will offer a different level of quality and customer service. With this in mind, ask for our product catalog, and make sure that you love the products offered. Review the product guide before you reserve your session to ensure that you know exactly what to expect of your total investment. For extra information about our products, have a look at our social medias for extra information about our style and make sure it suits you and your family. We offer high quality, natural light images that showcases love within families and couples.

Consider what you would like to do with your portraits. How do you want to see them every day? Do you want a large canvas in the nursery? An archival album that you can pass down to your child? A beautiful folio collection box on display in your living room? Gifts for the holidays or grandparents? Let’s talk about the products you really want in advance, so that we can work together to achieve the best possible end result. We may shoot differently for an album versus a large wall portrait or gallery-wrapped canvas.

think about your baby’s first year

Newborn portraits are quite possibly the most important portraits you will ever purchase. Of course, there will be many more milestones to capture throughout the first year including tummy time, sitting up, crawling, and taking those first steps. Consider joining our First Year Baby Plan with a series of sessions to ensure that you will never miss a milestone. Compile your Milestone sessions into one beautiful fine art album or folio after the first year, or purchase boutique prints and products with each session. Newborn clients join the plan at a special rate.

choose a photographer with a portfolio and a style that you love

Hire a professional who is aligned with your artistic sensibilities. Photography is highly specialized. Posing a newborn in a studio is not the same as coming into your home for a lifestyle session; each requires a different skill set. Every photographer has a unique style which will influence their selection of props, setup options, color choices and overall aesthetic. For the best results, choose a photographer with a portfolio that you absolutely love, and expect images that look like the photographer’s portfolio.

 print your portraits

I believe that photographs are best presented in tangible form and not buried on a hard drive. Invest in tangible, archival, art products that will become family heirlooms. Digital files are not archival, but a printed image will outlive everyone in the photo. Technology quickly becomes obsolete. Files can be erased or become corrupted. Computers crash.  When you’re no longer here, will your children be able to recover digital files saved to your computer hard drive? Probably not. But they will cherish those old family photo albums. We can always make a digital negative from a printed 8×10 image, but we cannot make a print from a corrupted digital file. It’s so important to get our photos off our digital devices and bring them into our lives. Give your children the joy of thumbing through a box of old photos and passing them around a room.

Seeing these images, I am struck, every time, by the incredible sense of pride seemingly beaming from this mother-to-be, and I can’t help but think how this child will feel one day, looking back at these maternity portraits of his mother, before she has become a mother, glowing with joy in anticipation of his arrival. That is a gift. A portrait as proof of this particular moment in his mother’s life when her world changed, and that smile that she wore just waiting for it to happen.

i purchased digital image files from my photographer, now what do i do with them?

first and foremost, the overwhelming majority of my clients walk away with much more than digital files.

Nearly every family or expecting parents that come for a Family, Maternity or Newborn session will leave with a customized portrait collection including: (1) at least one beautiful fine art piece from our boutique product line and (2) a digital folio.  As a photographer, I believe that helping clients move their photographs from their devices into real life, tangible form, is the most important service I can provide.  So in addition to the digital files, through the ordering process, I will help families create a customized portrait collection so that everyone leaves our final consulation meeting with something physical and archival that will be cherished in the home through the years and passed along to future generations.

As for the digital folio, here’s what you need to know to manage and protect your investment:

family photoshoot malta, family photographer malta, Riviera Bay Malta, sunset, sea view, natural light photographer, mother and son photograph

Back up your images!

Back up your images, back up the back-ups, and then back them up one more time:

Save your image files on multiple computers.
Back up the files to an external hard drive.
Back up the back-ups to an online storage location like Dropbox.
Print 8×10 copies, and store them in a safe, cool, dry place. You can always make a new digital negative from a good quality print, but you cannot make a print from a corrupt digital file.

Take note of the file size:

When clients purchase a high resolution folio, two versions of every image are provided; high resolution files and web optimized files. What does this mean?

High Resolution Files

High resolution images are very large, sometimes enormous images. They’re difficult to deal with in some cases, simply because they’re giant. They take up a lot more space, which is why you don’t want them on your phone. If you’ve ever opened up an image in an email from someone and waited forever for the entire image to load up, only to be looking at a super zoomed in version of the photo, it’s because you were emailed a giant image. There’s no reason to burden someone with such a file if they’re not going to need to print it, which is almost always the case. These large print files will produce the highest print quality and should be used for all your printing needs. Use these every single time you:

order any print of any size
print Christmas cards, holiday cards, birth announcements, etc.
order albums or canvas prints
purchase any other product with a print on it
provide the image to anyone else who may eventually want to print it

Web Files

Web optimized image files are much smaller versions of the images. These are optimized for web use. These images should not be printed. If you try to print these, the quality will be very low, producing blurry and pixelated prints. I like to provide these because having them makes it much easier for my clients to do the thing they all want to do more than anything else – share them online with family and friends. Web files are ideal for:

sending via email
texting
posting on social media
viewing and saving on your phone

Purchasing digital image files is a significant investment, so it’s important for me to help my clients understand how to keep those files safe and use them properly to get the best possible results when printing or sharing. I’m always happy to provide guidance to make sure that your images are reproduced properly.

If you have any questions about your files don't hesitate to get in touch, I'm always here to help!

Why you need to photograph your maternity

Many women say they feel their best during pregnancy. Whilst others struggle with health and/or body issues. Whether or not you love how you look, a professional photography session will make you feel absolutely beautiful. I have pictures my husband took of me standing sideways against a blank wall in our home to document my growing belly. I wish I'd made an investment in a maternity session.

Pregnancy is such an exciting time. Down the road, you might forget what it felt like to be expecting. Capture those emotions so you can look back on them with fondness. And if you don't know it by know, I'm very passionate about photographing maternity sessions. It is truly such a short period of your life and it should be treasured and enjoyed!

One thing that I have realized is that if we don't capture this precious stage in life, we will forget the feeling and the anticipation (beleive me, I'm a mother of three) when we have gorgeous photos we easily bring those memories back again. By the way, there is no rule that says you have to go somewhere for your maternity session. Why not let the photographer come to you for a more "lifestyle" approach? You can achieve all of the above in your own home environment.

What may feel like a lifetime waiting for your baby to arrive, really does go by fast! The focus in these sessions are of course the mother, belly and curious careful father! Long after the photos are taken they will be appreciated by your children, "this is my mother when she was expecting me".

If you are interested in planning your maternity photo shoot with Sugarlight Photography, don't hesitate to get in touch! I would love to plan it together with you.

Enjoy your day,
Gunilla
